Sugar, Daddy (2024) is a performance where Meris investigates his lifelong relationship with Coca-cola which his mother sold in her petty-shop. Both erotic and visceral, Sugar, Daddy (2024) plays with ideas of fetish, luring the viewer into an economy of sugarcoated decay. Sugar was the most profitable cash crop during the trans-atlantic slave trade where 12.5 million people were abducted from Africa. Sugar sits on tongues and slowly eats away at the human kidney. Sugar, Daddy (2024) metabolizes the painful yet decadent arc of history from the sugar cane plantations in Ayiti to the refigerator in petty shops and bodegas in Mom-&-Pop stores through the use of Coca-cola as material.
