"Emancipation: the Unfinished Project of Liberation" is a traveling museum exhibition that invited seven Black artists to respond to John Quincy Adams Ward's sculpture "Freedman." Meris presented a selection of works from his series Now You See Me, Now You Don't. These sculptures are inspired by a fine that he was falsely ticketed for fare evasion on the MTA. On the ticket, his height was recorded as 6'7 and his weighed 250 lbs. Meris is 6'2 and 185 lbs. In court, everyone looked like him, all being Black and Brown. This work asks what systems of invisibility make these violent policing strategies and systems of inequity possible? The kinetic sculptures slowly self-disintegrate, allowing the white plaster reproductions of his likeness to be freed from the hegemonic gaze. Meris employs roofing paper and double-sided tape to make I, Used to Be (series) drawings. The exhibition originated at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, TX, and traveled to several other venues, including the Newcomb Museum of Art, the Williams College Museum of Art, and the Telfair Museums in Savannah, Georgia, all cities with a significant stake in African enslavement.</span></div>

<br /><i>In Case you don’t know (Nkisi) </i>is fabricated guerrilla tactics using WIDAR an open source technology to emancipate the Nkisi Nkondi from an esteemed New York institution and return its ancestral knowledge back into the hands of its descendants. The rise of technology and AI softwares present unique opportunities to engage in conversations around restitution allowing me to usurp power, access and information. Nganga (spiritual specialist) employed the Nkisi to resolve disputes, confirm oaths and contracts, heal sickness, and punish wrongdoing or sorcery within a community. It felt fitting that the Nkisi would naturally find its way into my practice and me into its lore. </span></div>

Meris employs a compelling bricolage of visceral needles combined with ready-made Caribbean religious deities, mounted onto 3d printed polycarbonate geodesic spheres.<br />

These sculptures, at once cellular and cosmic, resonate with both universal and deeply personal experiences of living in an immunocompromised state. Bristling with a sense of familiarity, the works serve as powerful reminders of the interconnectedness of personal struggles.<br />

From childhood to her current role as a grandmother of ten, she has always been a devoted homemaker, cleaning, cooking, caring for, and nurturing her family. Meris's mother was the first person outside of himself that he ever depicted in lifecasting; this process was both cathartic and therapeutic for Meris, who comes from a family with minimal connection to Western art, and now finds herself immortalized. If coming out is a momentous experience this work is about inviting others in. </span></div><br />

Meris employs a compelling bricolage of visceral needles combined with ready-made Caribbean religious deities, mounted onto 3d printed polycarbonate geodesic spheres.<br />
<br />These sculptures, at once cellular and cosmic, resonate with both universal and deeply personal experiences of living in an immunocompromised state. Bristling with a sense of familiarity, the works serve as powerful reminders of the interconnectedness of personal struggles.<br /></span></div>

<br /><i>In Case you don’t know (Nkisi) </i>is fabricated guerrilla tactics using WIDAR an open source technology, to emancipate the Nkisi Nkondi from an esteemed New York institution and return its ancestral knowledge back into the hands of its descendants. The rise of technology and AI software presents unique opportunities to engage in conversations around restitution, allowing me to usurp power, access, and information. Nganga (spiritual specialist) employed the Nkisi to resolve disputes, confirm oaths and contracts, heal sickness, and punish wrongdoing or sorcery within a community. It felt fitting that the Nkisi would naturally find its way into my practice and me into its lore. </span></div>

<br />Lambi is an indigenous Taino and Ayisien kreyol word that translates to conch.

The world gave us scraps, and we made delicacies. We've always done more with less.<br />
<br />To the Rising Sun (2023) signals both towards a disabled future and one where, even in our collective disability, our work in unison will liberate us.

Since 2020, I've been nurturing a variety of plants, from orchids to spider-leaf plants, snake-leaf plants, and Christmas cacti. After moving from my brightly lit apartment in New Haven to a smaller, darker corner apartment in New York City, my plants began to wilt and slowly die. It occurred to me that if light wasn't coming to my plants, I should bring my plants to the light.<br />
<br />
Walking in the Light (2022-present) is a daily practice of nurturing my family of plants that occurs whenever there's sunlight in Harlem. This practice reminds me that just as plants need to be nurtured in the right ecosystem, I also need to care for myself and my community similarly. This is an excerpt of a daily devotional practice that exceeds the limits of the camera that collapses the distance between nature and culture. Walking in the Light (2022-present) is part of the Institute of Community Care, a broader practice that includes sculptures, installations, paintings, gardening, culinary arts, and community programming.</span>

<div style="text-align: left"><span class="at-the-very">In the summer of 2013, which marked the fortieth anniversary of Bahamian independence from British colonialism, Meris met with forty people of all walks of life living in the Bahamas - from civil servants to art patrons to college students- to individually investigate the essence of what it means to be Bahamian. Meris made forty ceramic teacups and saucers and had forty individual conversations that transcended social, economic, ethnic, and racial boundaries. After each conversation, Meris traded a teacup and a saucer with the participant. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahIWGc0EQto">Dis We Tea Party</a> is a physical manifestation of my findings: diverse, symbolic, personal, and collective. <div style="text-align: left"><span class="at-the-very">Meris was born in Haiti to an unmarried woman who was born in the Bahamas before the Bahamas declared independence from the United Kingdom in 1973; by Bahamian law, this makes him a Bahamian citizen. Although growing up, society treats people of Haitian descent as third-class, which, for much of Meris's youth, presented an identity crisis. Forty years later, we citizens and children of the soil and blood find ourselves pondering the existential question: What does it mean to be Bahamian? More globally, how can we look beyond a singular romantic view of homogeneous citizenship? If we are different, how do we allow space for difference? <br /></span></div>

These ‘body-doubles’ are vessels of the violence of racial interpellation; they represent his inability to control the way that his body reads in space. <i>Now You See Me; Now You Don’t </i>grounds itself in Ralph Ellison’s epic novel: Invisible Man, specifically in his employment of white plaster surrogates of his body that nod to Mr. Kimrbo quotes such as “keep America Pure” and “If It’s optic white, It’s the right white.”<br /></span></div>

<br />"Emancipation: the Unfinished Project of Liberation" was a museum exhibition that invited seven Black artists to respond to John Quincy Adams Ward's sculpture "Freedman." Meris presented a selection of works from his series Now You See Me, Now You Don't. These sculptures are inspired by a fine that he was falsely ticketed for fare evasion on the MTA. On the ticket, his height was recorded as 6'7 (200 cm) and his weighed 250 lbs (113 kg). Meris is 6'2 (188cm) and 185 lbs (84 kg). In court, everyone looked like him, all being Black and Brown. This work asks what systems of in/visibility make these violent policing strategies and systems of inequity possible? The kinetic sculptures slowly self-disintegrate, allowing the white plaster reproductions of his likeness to be freed from the hegemonic gaze. Meris employs roofing paper and double-sided tape to make I, Used to Be (series) drawings. The exhibition originated at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, TX, and traveled to several other venues, including the Newcomb Museum of Art, the Williams College Museum of Art, and the Telfair Museums in Savannah, Georgia, all cities with a significant stake in African enslavement.

<br /></h2><div style="text-align: left"><span class="work-padding">Perhaps Descartes' greatest theory, je pense, donc je suis (I think, therefore I am), encapsulates the hypocrisy of the French Enlightenment Era. What does it mean for the French and (white)man to have agency yet simultaneously and ironically colonize Haiti? Meris traces his francophone subjectivity using plaster particulates that fall from his kinetic sculptures, Now You See Me, Now You Don't, to create a sense of his own agency in his I, Used To Be drawings. <i>I Used to Be </i>drawings are made on roofing paper, a culturally and geographically specific material to his life in the Bahamas, where roofs are commonly blown away after a hurricane, and on double-sided tape, similar to EZ-fly traps specific to tropical climates. These drawings aim to map the abstract nature of freedom, moving from the concrete subjectivity of the body to the endless possibilities of abstraction. </span>

Since 2020, Meris has been nurturing a variety of plants, from orchids to spider plants, snake plants, and Christmas cacti. After moving from his brightly lit apartment in New Haven to a smaller, darker corner apartment in New York City, Meris noticed that his plants began to wilt and slowly die. It occurred to him that if light wasn't coming to his plants, he should bring his plants to the light.<br />
<br />
Walking in the Light (2022-present) is a daily practice of nurturing his family of plants that occurs whenever there's sunlight in New York City. This practice reminds him that just as plants need to be nurtured in the right ecosystem, he also needs to care for himself and his community similarly. Walking in the Light (2022-present) is part of the Institute of Community Care, a broader practice that includes sculptures, installations, paintings, gardening, culinary arts, and community programming.<br />

PAUL, MN, January 15, 2025 — Jerome Foundation is pleased to announce the 2025 Jerome Hill Artist Fellows, awarding 45 early career artists based in Minnesota and New York City. Fellows receive $60,000 over three consecutive years ($20,000 each year) in support of flexible, self-designed plans for their creative endeavors. The Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship supports artists working in and across multiple artistic fields, including dance; film; literature; music; technology centered arts; theater, performance, and spoken word; and visual arts.<br />
<br />
Jerome Foundation seeks to serve artists who take creative risks in exploring, expanding, imagining, or re-imagining creative practices and experiences; reclaiming or reviving traditional forms in original ways; and/or questioning, challenging, or disrupting cultural norms.
