In the same blue sky (2026), Meris uses oxidized copper as an allegory to the physical and psychic effects of HIV on the human body. Copper that has been tarnished by environmental factors is restored using acetic acid and calcium. The resulting stained cotton tea towels are then ruched and stretched into paintings. The same blue sky (2026) belongs to Meris’s care painting series where the actions of restoration and care become acts of queer resistance through a language of color-field abstraction.
